Lance Ball

\ So could Ball be ready to earn a greater share of the workload?\

\ “I don’t know if it’s Lance so much as it is Keon,” coach Ralph Friedgen said. “Keon has played extremely well and it’s tough to get him out of the game. It seems like we have longer series when he’s in the game. I think Lance has practiced very hard this week. I think he’s up to play, and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t play well.”\

\ As a fearless forecast, I’d bet Ball turns out to be the Terps’ primary rusher at least a couple times before the season’s out. The last time there was an undisputed No. 1 rusher in this program was 2001, when Bruce Perry led the team in carries in all but one game (that was a blowout of Troy State, and Perry’s services weren’t required in the second half). \

\ Since then Friedgen has played the hot hand from some combination of Perry, Chris Downs, Sammy Maldonado, Josh Allen, Mario Merrills, Lattimore and Ball. That’s a strong trend over the last five seasons, and one I’m not about to discount the chances of Ball churning out a few 25-carry, 110-yard days before his college career is finished.\
