A federal website that is supposed to connect uninsured Americans with coverage options under Obamacare, besieged by visitors since its launch on Tuesday, is now letting customers know they can also sign up by phone.

Interested parties and people without employer-based coverage who have logged onto HealthCare.gov, a federal website that channels users to enrollment applications or markets in certain states, have faced long wait times on a “holding page” that asks them to wait in line before gaining access to the site’s log-in page.

The message has changed, bit by bit, as the days go by.

On Friday, the message thanked users for their patience while offering a new route to coverage.

“In a hurry?” it said. “You might be able to apply faster at our Marketplace call center. Call 1-800-318-2596 to talk with one of our trained representatives about applying over the phone.”
