Rep. Raul Grijalva said Wednesday it is time to let diplomacy “run its course,” as President Obama looks for a way to punish Syrian President Bashar Assad for the use of chemical weapons on civilians last month near Damascus.

The Arizona Democrat said it was wise for Mr. Obama to tug the nation back from the brink of military intervention because relying solely on force would be a “mistake,” particularly in terms of American opinion.

“I thought what he did was necessary and appropriate,” Mr. Grijalva told C-SPAN’s Washington Journal.

He said a methodical approach to the situation will allow the global community to rally around a way to hold Mr. Assad accountable.

“What he did was criminal, it was an atrocity against his own people,” he said.
