House Democrats enjoyed the spoils of victory on Friday after shutting out the Republicans, 22-0, at Nationals Park late Thursday in Congress’ annual baseball game for charity.
“Our team had 24 hits and no errors in the field,” Democratic team manager Rep. Mike Doyle, of Pennsylvania, said from the chamber floor as he stood by a large trophy.
Rep. Joe Barton, Texas Republican, was a gracious loser in his remarks. He singled out Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona as the GOP MVP, even if there wasn’t much more to celebrate.
“The Democrats squeaked out a 22-to-nothing victory over the stalwart Republican team. … Our hats are off to you,” Mr. Barton said.
Win or lose, the 52nd annual CQ Roll Call Congressional Baseball Game raised about $300,000 for the Washington Literacy Center, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington and Washington Nationals Dream Foundation.
