Despite their close friendship with Anthony Weiner’s wife, former President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary won’t support the disgraced ex-congressman’s rumored run for mayor of New York City, The New York Post reported on Monday.
Mr. Weiner, who resigned in 2011 after it was revealed he sent sexually explicit messages and photos to women over the Internet, reportedly is considering a bid to lead the city. With his scandal less than two years old, such a run would be an unusually quick attempt at a political comeback for the Democrat, once considered a rising star in the party.
But The Post reports that, even though Mr. Weiner’s wife, Huma, is a close and trusted aide to Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state, the Clintons won’t support a mayoral campaign.
Democratic sources told the newspaper that every time Mr. Weiner’s behavior is discussed, it’s a “reminder of Bill’s scandal with Monica Lewinsky.”
Those reminders could be damaging to Mrs. Clinton’s widely expected 2016 presidential run, sourced told The Post.
